Maine Farmland Trust plans to rehabilitate a vacant building in the town of Unity for the purpose of creating a food hub that will serve local farmers and consumers. As part of the building renovation, MFT is seeking grant and loan funds to help remediate any environmental hazards at the site. As a requirement of receiving those funds, MFT is making public this notification:

Public Meeting, April 29, 2014, 5:30 PM at the Unity Community Center

This provides public notice of the availability of the draft Analysis of Brownfields Cleanup Alternatives and Remedial Action Plan (ABCA/RAP) for environmental cleanup to be conducted at the above referenced property, for public review and comment. This ABCA/RAP was prepared as a requirement of the EPA Brownfields Revolving Loan Fund (RLF) grant awarded to the Kennebec Valley Council of Governments (KVCOG), which is providing funding to Maine Farmland Trust (MFT) for the remediation of the Former Unity Grammar School. The document, as well as previous environmental assessment documents for the Site, can be reviewed at the MFT office located at 97 Main Street, Belfast, Maine Monday through Friday 9 am to 4:30 pm. These documents can also be reviewed at the KVCOG office located at 17 Main Street in Fairfield, Maine Monday through Friday 9 am to 4:30 pm. This also provides notice that comments on the draft ABCA/RAP and on the proposed remediation of the Former Unity Grammar School can be submitted in writing to Maine Farmland Trust, 97 Main Street, Belfast, Maine 04915, Attention: Ms. Kristin Varnum, or by electronic mail to kvarnum@mainefarmlandtrust.org. The public comment period for these documents begins April 5, 2014, and ends May 4, 2014.

 

A Public Meeting concerning the draft ABCA/RAP and on the proposed remediation of the Former Unity Grammar School will be held on Tuesday, April 29, 2014, at 5:30 PM at the Unity Community Center, 32 School Street, Unity, Maine. Public comments on the draft ABCA/RAP and on the proposed remediations will be accepted at this meeting.

 

The cleanup activities recommended in the ABCA/RAP include the following:

 

  • Removal of lead-impacted soil from the perimeter of the building and installation of a clean soil cover system
  • Removal and proper disposal of asbestos, lead based paint and universal/hazardous waste from the building while preserving certain elements of historic significance
  • Removal of small quantities of petroleum impacted soil from the building’s basement
