Over the course of our 20th Anniversary year, we released six films featuring our program areas, our history, and our future. All films produced in partnership with Knack Factory for our 20th Anniversary.

OUR ROOTS

Twenty years ago a small group of farmers and farm advocates started talking about this idea: that farmland, and farming, matter and should be protected. Soon, that little seed of an idea took root, and Maine Farmland Trust began as the first and only land trust in Maine dedicated to protecting farmland and supporting farmers.

FARM VIABILITY AT RIPLEY FARM

One of the best ways to protect farmland is to keep farmers in business. That’s the goal behind our farm viability program, which includes a range of programs and services intended to improve the long-term viability of farms, like Ripley Farm in Dover-Foxcroft. We work directly with farmers of all experience levels as they develop markets and grow successful businesses.

FARMLAND PROTECTION AT HIGH VIEW FARM

Protecting Maine’s precious farmland is the only way to ensure that we’ll have the land we need to grow food in the future. Several years ago, Maine Farmland Trust worked with Bill and Darcy Winslow at High View Farm in Harrison to protect their farm, making sure that that land will continue to be available for farming for the next generation and beyond. High View is just one of hundreds of farms MFT has helped to protect since 1999.

CELEBRATING AGRICULTURE THROUGH ART

We believe that farming is essential to Maine’s future. That’s why MFT uses art to showcase the successes, challenges, and ambitions of Maine’s farm landscape through art exhibits, photography, publications, films, and music. By expanding the conversation around agriculture, we help create a path for farming to realize its full potential.

A FARM FOR THE FUTURE AT BO LAIT FARM

Finding and securing good, affordable farmland is one of the biggest hurdles facing young and beginning farmers. Through Maine Farmland Trust, first-generation farmers Alexis and Conor of Bo Lait Farm in Washington, Maine were able to find the land they needed to establish their organic dairy operation. The farmers then worked with MFT to protect the land with an easement, making the property more affordable while also ensuring that the farm will be available for future generations of farmers.

OUR VISION FOR THE FUTURE

As we celebrate our 20th year, we are looking ahead to the future of farming in Maine. We envision a thriving agricultural landscape where farms feed our economy, steward our natural resources, and nourish our communities. You can be a part of growing a bright future for farming!
