Access Farmland

Are you ready for a farm of your own, but the barriers to finding land, starting a business, or growing a business feel insurmountable? Or, do you need more land to expand your farm operation? We can guide you—either through our own programs or by connecting you to one of our partners.

Farmers trimming crops for harvest

Ways we help farmers get on the land:

Maine FarmLink

Through our Maine FarmLink program and our relationships in the Maine farm community, we connect farmers looking for land with available farms.

Purchasing easements at the time of sale

We purchase agricultural easements on farms that are in transition. In these cases, the farmer selling the farm has connected with a farmer who wants to buy the land; money from sale of the easement reduces the overall cost of the land for the new farmer.

Buy Protect Sell

In some instances, we buy farms at risk of going out of production, protect the land with an easement, and find new farmers for the land. These Buy Protect Sell projects are intended to help farmers get on land more affordably, and to protect farmland that would likely have otherwise been developed.  In some cases, we lease the land to the new farmers to give them the time they need to move into full ownership. We list available BPS properties on Maine FarmLink.
