John Piotti, Executive Director of the Maine Farmland Trust, will present a talk entitled Agriculture in Maine: Its Promises and its Challenges at the University of Maine at Augusta, on January 27th at 2:00pm in Room 180 of Jewett Hall. The presentation is part of the Forum on the Future series sponsored by the UMA Senior College.
During his talk, Piotti will discuss Maine’s role as a major food supplier for New England and its importance in Maine's economy. However, because of land use practices, and the aging of Maine farmers, preserving Maine farmland and making it available to younger farmers becomes critical for the State's agricultural future.
As former Majority Leader for the Maine House of Representatives, and a former staff member of Coastal Enterprises Inc., Piotti has been actively involved in the development and promotion of farming in Maine for 16 years.
Following the presentation, and a refreshment break, Piotti will be joined by Marilyn Meyerhans, the 39-year owner and operator of two apple orchards in Maine, along with another Maine farmer for an audience discussion of issues in agriculture.
The forum is free and open to the public.
