Program offers low-cost farm products

UNITY — Lower-income residents of the greater Unity area now have a chance to access great food from local farms at affordable prices.

According to a press release, Maine Farmland Trust is accepting applications for its Community Farm Share program, a multi-farm Community Supported Agriculture project that provides fresh, healthy, affordable food raised by local farms to income-eligible residents. This project connects SNAP (or Food Stamp) recipients and others in need of food assistance with local farms.

Through its Farm Viability Program, Maine Farmland Trust can offer participating clients a share of fresh healthful produce at half its normal market price. The Summer Share — June through October — allows recipients to shop directly at more than a dozen participating local farms or at the Unity Farmers Market. The Winter Community Farm Share — November through March — hosts a monthly pickup day in Unity, allowing recipients one central location to pick up veggies, meats, milk and more.

This program is made possible with support from participating towns, John T. Gorman Foundation, Wholesome Wave Foundation, and USDA Ag Marketing Services.
