Action Alert: Congress Must Invest in Climate-Smart Food and Agriculture

Congress Can Make Investments to Address Climate Change

We have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to advocate for major investments in addressing climate change. Congress is busy writing a climate and infrastructure bill, which they will pass using the budget reconciliation process. This bill could invest billions in helping farmers across the country and in Maine reduce greenhouse gas emissions, sequester carbon, and become resilient to climate change impacts.

Will you call your legislators today to urge them to stand strong and make big and bold infrastructure investments in climate-smart food and agriculture systems?

TAKE ACTION

Call your members of Congress:

  • Representative Chellie Pingree (1st District) – (202) 225-6116
  • Representative Jared Golden (2nd District) – (202) 225-6306
  • Senator Susan Collins – (202) 224-2523
  • Senator Angus King – (202) 224-5344

Leave a message for your lawmaker that goes something like this:

Hello, my name is ____ and I’m a ____ [farmer, concerned citizen…] in the district/Maine. I’m calling about the budget reconciliation package. It’s critical that agriculture funding in this milestone bill helps farmers address climate change and adapt to its impacts. There are four specific investments I hope you will prioritize:

  • $30 billion for climate-friendly agriculture and working lands conservation programs
  • $5 billion for climate-resiliency-focused sustainable and organic agriculture research
  • $3 billion for value-added agriculture, on-farm renewable energy, and livestock processing
  • Debt relief to stabilize the operations of producers who have not received a fair share of aid from recent federal support programs.

Thank you for your time!
