St. George — If the abundance of locally grown food is part of daily life, then the Thursday, Feb. 16 event with John Piotti should be on one's schedule.
Piotti, executive director of Maine Farmland Trust, will discuss efforts to keep families in farming, current trends in agriculture, and the future for farming in Maine at "The Future of Agricultural Land" at 7 p.m. at the St. George Town Office in Tenants Harbor. Co-sponsors, the Conservation Commission and the Friends of St. George, always have refreshments on hand at these events of their annual winter series.
Piotti offers insights gleaned from more than 15 years of intensive involvement in agricultural issues in Maine. He has served on a number of state task forces, including Maine's Farm Vitality Task Force and the Governor's Dairy Task Force. During his time in the state legislature, he chaired the Committee on Agriculture, Conservation, and Forestry. Beyond state borders, he chaired the Northeast Sustainable Agriculture Working Group and was a director of the National Campaign for Sustainable Agriculture. In 2005, he was one of only eight Americans awarded an Eisenhower Fellowship which enabled him to study European models that use agriculture to support sustainable community development.
